The Moth in the Mirror (Splintered #1.5) by A G Howard {REVIEW}

 Buy The Moth in the Mirror on Amazon
An original ebook-only novella in the Splintered series, told from the points of view of both Jeb and Morpheus. Morpheus wants to know more about his rival for Alyssa's affections, so he digs into Jeb's memories of his time in Wonderland. But he may be surprised by what he finds.

This brand-new story and perspective from A.G. Howard's dark, magical world stands alone, but also provides a tantalizing glimpse of what's to come in Unhinged, the sequel to Splintered.

My Review :

Okay so this was long due. I had finished it quite a long ago but completely forgot putting up a review. SO here we go-

It was great to see Morpheus' pov for the first time, so clearly. The books focuse mainly on Alyssa, so even though we get Morpheus, we see him thorough her eyes. This didn't happen here because Alyssa isn't physically present. And seeing him in first person narrative was GREAT!

The novella basically reveals the incidents that are missing from Splintered, like the time range of Jeb and Al's separation at different periods, first after immediately arriving at Wonderland, when they come face to face with Morpheus, and also when Jeb is held captive by Morpheus.

Needless to say, author A G Howard has written a wonderful companion to the Splintered series. The novella has an obviously short but well-knitted plot that is very nicely enacted from beginning to the end. The novella is majorly Morpheus's pov but never for once did I feel that his direct presence overpowers Jeb's indirect one. At times I almost forgot neither Jeb nor Alice is present there on the spot.

The most interesting parts for me after reading The Moth in the Mirror are the ones that made me look at two of the familiar characters from a different light. One is Gossamer, and another one is our very own 'Dark' hero Morph the Moth. To avoid any spoiler, I would just say that I didn't expect for Gossamer to do what she did ;) And for Morpheus, well the guy is eccentric as always. But something about the way he expresses his thoughts at the end gave me goosebumps.. now whether they are good ones or bad ones, I don't know O_O

Just wish the story wasn't this short...

So, this is a very very quick read, and not compulsory. But it's definitely going to help you understand the characters all the more. I feel that character development is equally important, compared to plot. The Moth in the Mirror definitely helped me understand the human/s as well as the Netherlings. Strongly recommended for Splintered fangirls ('Girls' specifically because you get to see so much of Morpheus and Jeb together :D )
